Women in Science Dr.Olympia Nissiforou


On the occasion of the World Day for Women in Science, the Cyprus University of Technology, with a view to encouraging women and young girls towards engaging in science, presents women scientists being employed at the University and devoted to their research activities.

Dr. Olympia Nissiforou

Holder of a doctorate degree in Environmental Science and Technology, graduate Marine Scientist and holder of postgraduate degrees in Environmental Pollution Control and in Natural Sciences Learning. Her doctoral dissertation topic has been: “Cogeneration of treated water and renewable sources of energy and other by-products from macro-algae biomass which have been used as biofilters for the purification of piglets” for which she received a scholarship from the Research Promotion Foundation - 0311/21 PENEK Scholarship – amounting to € 87,500.

Additionally, for her research she has received funding from various institutions such as the Bank of Piraeus, Hellenic Bank as well as scholarship awarded from UNESCO (2010/2011Scholarship UNESCO Fellowships Program for Program Priorities), where she won the first place worldwide.

Her academic career was launched at the Sustainable Energy Laboratory of the Cyprus University of Technology where it continues until today.

She is a member of the management committee at COST Action FA1406 and participated in several international and national research programmes as well as in actions of the Innovation Regional Plan of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIIT) - (Regional Innovation Scheme - RIS of Climate KIC ) through workshops and Chrysalis LEAP (http: //chrysalisleap.com)

Her main research interests fall within natural and energy resources management , climate change, control of the environmental pollution , in research methodologies and many more.

Since then, she has been studying the eco-physiology and the possibilities of using different biofilters from macro-algae, belonging to the categories green algae, red algae, and brown algae for processing purposes of fodder effluents such as piggery effluents and the consolidation of other water sources.

Piggery waste is high in nitrogen and phosphorus content and through a given practice, it binds these inorganic nutrients. At the same time, she investigates the use of by-products from their produced biomass as bio-fuels, bio-plastic and the use of fertilizer as a product or feedstock etc. The importance of carrying out such research is of great importance, considering the severe limitations set by the European Union for the quality of waste water, as well as the side-uses of the macro-algae biomass.

Through science we can contribute to the development of a sustainable society, leaving no room for racial discrimination.
