Students with special needs

The University through Student Services seeks to serve students with special needs by offering equal treatment and access to programs and services without creating changes in the basic elements of the programs. Students with special needs are expected to cope with the academic level of the university with the opportunity for accommodations as appropriate. The facilities differ according to the case of each student and are referred to in the University's Rules of Support for Students with Special Needs.

The Student Development Center is usually the point of entry for people who have formal evidence of learning, physical or psychological difficulties that qualify them for disability accommodation. Facility decisions are considered on an individual basis. The Office in collaboration with the individual assesses the effect of the specific problem in relation to the academic program and academic level. During this process, academic and administrative staff of the university are likely to work together to review the academic environment and its relationship with the individual.

At the beginning of each semester, the individual fills out the Authorization to Inform Academic Staff form so that they are entitled to the corresponding facilities. The individual's teaching academics will be informed of the proposed facilities and configuration of the space for the specific individual. Official certificates remain in the individual's file in the Counseling Office so that the individual can return at the beginning of each semester to complete the form for that semester only. The facilities are only for the current semester and not for the past or future. If the person does not inform the university, then they will not have the required facilities and the professors will not be informed either. The only people who will be informed of the individual's status are the Counseling Office, the Dean of Studies and Student Affairs, the President and the teaching academics of the Department. Under no circumstances is personal data leaked to the rest of the university community.

No person is obligated to report this particular problem. But there are specific benefits since the University is sensitive and recognizes the difficulties faced by students with special needs and for this reason provides an integrated support system for its students. If the Counseling Office is notified at the beginning of the semester, then various possible forms of support and facilitation will be discussed.

The person contacting the Counseling Office about special needs issues will not be stigmatized. People who are characterized by the following conditions can contact, support and are entitled to facilities:

  • Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities (a detailed report of the diagnostic tool is needed with interview information, ability assessment, diagnosis. A copy of facilities provided in the past by the student's school is not enough. A simple report of academic problems, academic anxiety, etc. does not constitute a learning disability) .
  • Blindness or severe vision problems
  • Deafness or severe hearing problems
  • Being confined to a wheelchair or mobility problems
  • Serious Psychiatric \ Psychological Problems
  • Serious health problems that affect academic performance

Official medical certificates are required for all categories. The study of each case and the decision on the method of support is the sole responsibility of the Cyprus University of Technology.

The Counseling Office must have a holistic view in order to cooperate with the Department in which the person is studying and ensure the corresponding facilities. The official document that mentions the student's problem must have the corresponding specialty for the specific subject and must not be a relative of the applicant. Certificates must:

  • They include a clear analysis of the problem stating the diagnosis and prognosis.
  • It is recent and not more than three years from the date of its publication.
