The course is designed to teach principles of direct measurements of human exposure using advanced analytical instrumentation, such as coupled platforms of chromatography and mass spectrometry for numerous environmental contaminants. Generated data analysis skills will be practiced using univariate statistics, correlation, and multiple linear (logistic) regression. Students will improve their understanding of methods determining dermal exposure, non-dietary ingestion (e.g., house dust ingestion by children), and oral ingestion of contaminants. The application of various biomarkers of exposure to environmental chemicals (serum, urine, nails, etc.) will be explored. Laboratory methods of human biomonitoring with emphasis on quality control and quality assurance protocols will be tested in the laboratory via hands-on experience by the students. Specific examples of exposure science applications in the field will be critically evaluated by student groups in the form of a state-of-the-art review.
