Presentation of RISE Excellence Center at the Cyprus University of Technology

In the presence of staff members, undergraduate and graduate students of the Cyprus University of Technology, a public event was held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 for the presentation of the RISE- Research Center on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies. RISE (http://rise.org.cy) started operating in 2018 after the successful outcome of both phases of evaluation of the first H2020-TEAMING programs of the European Commission, for which the invitation was made in 2014, while the final results were announced in 2017.


RISE, the only excellence center in Cyprus that focuses on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies, is a joint venture between the three public universities of Cyprus (Cyprus University of Technology, University of Cyprus, Open University of Cyprus), Max-Planck Institute for Informatics of Germany, University College London and the Municipality of Nicosia, as a coordinating partner.


RISE has an initial budget of approximately €50 million in cash and in kind, invested by the European Commission, the Government of Cyprus, the partners of the consortium and other sources. The event was enacted by the Rector of the Cyprus University of Technology, Professor Andreas Anagiotos. In his greeting, the Rector, among other things, referred to the support that the Center receives from the Cyprus University of Technology. He also mentioned the importance of the project for the long-term sustainability of the scientific, technological and economic development of Cyprus and Europe.


This was followed by a presentation of the strategic planning of the Center of Excellence by the General Manager of RISE Mr. Spyros Nikolaou. Mr. Nikolaou developed the strategic goals of the center and explained the ways of sustainability and scalability of RISE.


Next, the Assistant Professor Despina Michail-Grigoriou, Scientific Officer on behalf of the Cyprus University of Technology in the RISE project, presented to the audience opportunities for research and collaboration with the Center for Excellence.


The event concluded with an open discussion during which the attendees had the opportunity to submit their questions and suggestions.
