The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering of the Cyprus University of Technology offers modern undergraduate and graduate programs that promote critical thinking, efficient learning and effective conceptualization pertinent to the understanding and solving of engineering problems; these tools are of paramount importance to the scientific and technological needs of the 21st century. The Department combines the advantages of the well-established and professionally accredited field of Mechanical Engineering with the innovative nature of Materials Science and Engineering in a unified program of study both at the undergraduate and graduate level.
The Department offers a four-year undergraduate program leading to a degree in Mechanical Engineering while at the same time allowing students to select courses in Materials Science and Engineering through their technical electives. The structure of the program is such that in the first two years it provides students with a strong foundation in the applied sciences and engineering. During the last two years the program offers additional courses in Mechanical Engineering as well as specialized courses in Materials Science and Engineering. In particular, at the end of the 4th semester, the students are required to choose one of three possible streams: (a) Energy Systems, (b) Mechanics and Dynamical Systems, (c) Materials Science and Engineering. The program of study has been accredited by ETEK (Technical Chamber of Cyprus) which is the official Body that offers professional accreditation to Engineers in Cyprus. All the Department’s graduates are registered by ETEK as Professional Mechanical Engineers.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering also offers two graduate programs at the Master’s level (M.Sc./M.S) in (a) Mechanical Engineering and (b) Energy Systems. In parallel, the Department has established a Ph.D. program that has already attracted and graduated high-caliber students. In recognition of the diversity of the disciplines of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering, the Department has successfully fostered the appropriate teaching and research environment for its students that allow them to meet their educational and professional aspirations and pursue their career goals in Cyprus and abroad. The state-of-the-art equipment in our laboratories is continuously being upgraded in accordance with the pertinent technological developments and supports our research and teaching activities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Mechanical and Materials Engineering are among the broadest engineering disciplines; they rely on the utilization of the scientific principles of physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology for the analysis, design, development, optimization, and production of devices, components, systems and processes. The very nature of our undergraduate and graduate programs allows students to be further educated in the interdisciplinary fields of nanoengineering, bioengineering, robotics, optoelectronics, alternative energy systems and many others that characterize modern technology. Our graduates are trained to be problem solvers; this ability coupled with a diverse skill-set enables them to seek professional careers in any part of the world.
In spite of its short life, the Department is proud of its significant research activities that include coordination and participation in more than 25 major research programs funded by both domestic and European funding agencies. The total amount of research funding for the Department stemming from the aforementioned programs exceeds 6.5 million Euro. Recent funding from European research platforms as well as the two major infrastructure programs on “Molecular Electronics and Photonics” and “Nanostructured Materials Systems” that have been secured through the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (R.P.F.) and the Structural Funds of the European Union are significant achievements stemming from the research efforts of all Faculty Members.
The long-term vision of the Department is to establish itself as an international center of research and learning through the synergy of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. Our objectives conform to the professional aspirations of our students to address the current and future needs of the Cypriot industry or continue their studies abroad.
