Prof. Christos P. Loizou (Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Sc.) is an adjunct Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics of the Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus. He has more than 25 years of experience in medical imaging and video analysis and processing. He has been involved in more than 30 different research projects funded by the research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, the EU, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH-USA), with a total funding in the range of 24 million Euro. He has published 42 journal publications, 73 conference papers, 6 books, and 13 chapters in books in [...]these areas (number of citations more than 3,800, h-index 25, i-10 index 48, and RG score 46.92). He was a supervisor of a number of Ph.D. (9), M.Sc. (27) and B.Sc. (75) students in computer image, video analysis and telemedicine. His research interests include medical imaging, video analysis and processing; motion analysis; signal processing; pattern recognition; voice stress signal analysis; biosignal analysis in ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging and video and computer applications in medicine. He has extensive experience in image/video pre-processing, despeckling, segmentation and texture analysis. Dr. Loizou is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and serves as a reviewer in many IEEE Transactions journals and as a chair or co-chair in many IEEE conferences. He is also an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Nicosia, Cyprus a co-founder and member of the e-Health Laboratory of the University of Cyprus.

Research Interests

  • Ultrasound image and video quality evaluation of the carotid artery, echocardiography and cardiac images.
  • Image processing and analysis for the detection of dementia, stress and other related neurological disorders.
  • Ultrasound image and video enhancement and restoration through despeckle filtering. Original contribution in the development of 25 despeckle filters and an integrated despeckle filtering system. Testing of the filters in 700 ultrasound images of the carotid artery, cardiac and MRI images.
  • Speckle reduction and segmentation in ultrasound imaging for medical applications
  • Magnetic Resonance image analysis. Multiple sclerosis lesion segmentation and texture analysis
  • Optical flow motion estimation and video analysis in carotid artery ultrasound videos
  • Segmentation in echocardiography, ultrasound images and videos of the carotid artery. Original contribution in developing a complete system for carotid artery wall and plaque segmentation
  • Commercial Software development (part of it) (Image Analysis Program for Ultrasonic Arterial Wall Changes and Atherosclerotic Plaques), where three research modules are fully integrated in it, which also includes other elements related to the evaluation of the risk of stroke. This package has been patented and is now being sold worldwide (Adlare Ltd, PO Box 172, Greenford, UB6 9ZN, London, UK)

Developing a part of a system for analysing risk of stroke from carotid video plaques that would improve the care of anyone with any stage of carotid vascular disease.

3)            EUREKA/EUNEA/0311/01: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Co-investigator, Study Title: “STRIC-A software platform for small range-imaging cameras-”. University of Cyprus is the Host Organisation. European funding projects.  In cooperation with Neovision s.r.o and the Technical University of Prague, 01 March 2012- 01 March 2014. Total Budget allocated: EUR 154,000. STRIC (Software Toolbox for Range Imaging Cameras) aims at designing and developing a software toolbox for range imaging cameras and data handling. The toolbox will be capable of handling industrial, archaeological or medical applications and these applications.

4)            ΤΠΕ/ΟΡΙΖΟ/0308/(ΒΙΕ)/15: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Project Co-ordinator, Study Title: “Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Brain White Matter Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis Subjects”. Centre of Applied Research and Technology (KEET) is the Host Organisation 2008 Annual Program for the Financing of Research projects, Dec 2008-June 2011. Total Budget allocated: EUR 129,775. Development of a system for assisting the doctor in the assessment and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis disease. This will help in the early diagnosis, accurate prognosis and follow up of the disease. In co-operation with University of Cyprus, Ayios Therissos Medical and Diagnostic Centre, Institute of Neurology and Genetics. 

5)            ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ/ΠΑΓΙΟ/0308/10: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Project Co-ordinator, Study Title: “Installation and upgrade of a 300 WB NMR spectrometer. Drug design through conformational analysis studies and prognosis of diseases through magnetic resonance imaging”, Dec 2008-Jan 2012. Total Budget allocated: EUR 400,000. Centre of Applied Research and Technology (KEET) is the Host Organisation. 2008 Annual Program for the Financing of Research projects.

6)            VISEMA APOEM/0505/05 Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Project co-ordinator, Study Title: “Video segmentation and motion analysis of the atherosclerotic carotid plaque in ultrasound imaging”, February 2006-February 2007. Centre of Applied Research and Technology (KEET) is the Host Organisation. 6th Annual Program for the Financing of Research projects 2006, Hosting an expatriate researcher. Total Budget allocated: EUR 57,457 (CY Pounds 35,405). Developing a system for assessing plaque motion analysis patterns of ultrasound image sequences of atherosclerotic carotid plaque. In co-operation with Imperial College, London, UK, University of New Mexico, USA, University of Cyprus, Institute of Neurology and Genetics. 

7)            OPTOPOIISI PLIRO/1104: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Co-investigator, Study Title: “Model development of optical attention by incorporating knowledge for video coding based on the human perception”. June 2005-July 2007, Total Budget allocated: EUR 136,826 (CY Pounds 79,550).  6th Annual Program for the Financing of Research projects, In co-operation with the, University of Cyprus, Department of Computer Science, and Kings College, London. 

8)            NEVRORAFI IGIA/1104: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Co-investigator, Study Title: “Guidance of the neurosurgery procedure using optical coherence tomography imaging”. June 2005-July 2007, Total Budget allocated: EUR 184,771 (CY Pounds 107,425). 6th Annual Program for the Financing of Research projects. System development for guiding a nerve surgery. In co-operation with the University of Cyprus, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, and the American Heart Institute of Cyprus. 

9)            TALOS PLIRO/0603/05: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Co-Investigator. Study Title: “Integrated system for the evaluation of ultrasound imaging of the carotid artery”. June 2003-Febr. 2006. Total Budget allocated: EUR 132,199 (CY Pounds 76,860). In co-operation with, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics-Nicosia, the University of Cyprus and the Cardiology Institute of Cyprus. Development of neural networks based image-processing techniques for predicting the risk of stroke based on ultrasound images of the carotid arteries.

10)          IASIS PLIRO/0601: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus: Co-Investigator, Study Title: “Integrated system for the support of the diagnosis for the risk of stroke”, December 2002-November 2005. Total Budget allocated: EUR 137,700 (CY Pounds 80,530).  5th Annual Program for the Financing of Research projects. Development of a network for computer aided diagnosis of the risk of stroke. In co-operation with, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Department of Computer Science University of Cyprus.

Prof. Christos P. Loizou (Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Sc.) is an adjunct Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics of the Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus. He has more than 25 years of experience in medical imaging and video analysis and processing. He has been involved in more than 30 different research projects funded by the research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, the EU, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH-USA), with a total funding in the range of 24 million Euro. He has published 42 journal publications, 73 conference papers, 6 books, and 13 chapters in books in these areas (number of citations more than 3,800, h-index 25, i-10 index 48, and RG score 46.92). He was a supervisor of a number of Ph.D. (9), M.Sc. (27) and B.Sc. (75) students in computer image, video analysis and telemedicine. His research interests include medical imaging, video analysis and processing; motion analysis; signal processing; pattern recognition; voice stress signal analysis; biosignal analysis in ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging and video and computer applications in medicine. He has extensive experience in image/video pre-processing, despeckling, segmentation and texture analysis. Dr. Loizou is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and serves as a reviewer in many IEEE Transactions journals and as a chair or co-chair in many IEEE conferences. He is also an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Nicosia, Cyprus a co-founder and member of the e-Health Laboratory of the University of Cyprus.
