STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The program aims to prepare students to acquire advanced midwifery competencies (Knowledges-Skills-Behaviors) for autonomous, effective, safe and qualitative practice of midwifery as required by the relevant legislation, the international midwifery standards and the Ethical and Professional Codes of Midwives.

The program is structured so as to ensure that the graduate will be able to practice according to the legally recognized activities of midwives in Europe and the global standards for midwifery practice of the International Confederation of Midwives.

The graduate:

Practices autonomously and as an effective member of the health care team, in any environment (Hospital, community, at home, independent practice), to provide safe and high quality midwifery care for women of reproductive age, especially before conception, during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, including the care of the newborn.
Diagnoses and monitors a normal pregnancy, writes recipes and performs necessary tests to monitor the development of normal pregnancies.
Records or advices on the necessary tests for the early diagnosis of high risk pregnancies.
Provides antenatal and parenthood classes program using complete information and preparation for the pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum period, the newborn and the strengthening of the family.
Provides research evidence-based information for promotion of reproductive and sexual health of women, from puberty to menopause, including infertility and family planning.
Evaluates, examines, monitors and cares for the woman and the fetus during childbirth using the appropriate clinical and technical means.
Manage and perform autonomously normal childbirths, including episiotomy and suturing where appropriate, and in emergency breech childbirths.
Recognize warning signs of abnormal or potentially abnormal situation of the mother or the fetus / newborn, call for medical assistance and assist in medical intervention where appropriate. Take the necessary emergency measures in the doctors’ absence and especially the manual removal of the placenta that can possibly follow after the manual examination of the uterus.
Examines and takes care of the newborn by taking the necessary steps in an emergency and handles immediate resuscitation where needed.
Examines, takes care and monitors the progress of the mother and newborn during the postpartum and provides the mother with the necessary advice and support for the newborns care in order to strengthen and ensure the best possible development and welfare of the child.
Applies with safety, professionalism and quality the treatment specified by the doctor.
Records all the necessary documents for each case and maintains the necessary records in conventional or electronic form.
Acknowledges the necessity and usefulness of lifelong learning for personal and professional development.
Implements the relevant legislation, midwifery ethics and professional behavior.
Applies principles and teaching skills, effective communication, counseling, research, leadership and management.

Clinical learning outcomes in appropriate clinical settings and under the supervision and guidance of scientific midwifery personnel, students of midwifery acquire the following competencies:

Advising of pregnant women, involving at least 100 pre-natal examinations.
Supervision and care of at least 40 pregnant women.
Conduct by the student of at least 40 deliveries; where this number cannot be reached owing to the lack of available women in labour, it may be reduced to a minimum of 30, provided that the student assists with 20 further deliveries.
Active participation with breech deliveries. Where this is not possible because of lack of breech deliveries, practice may be in a simulated situation.
Performance of episiotomy and initiation into suturing. Initiation shall include theoretical instruction and clinical practice. The practice of suturing includes suturing of the wound following an episiotomy and a simple perineal laceration. This may be in a simulated situation if absolutely necessary.
Supervision and care of 40 women at risk in pregnancy, or labour or post-natal period.
Supervision and care (including examination) of at least 100 post-natal women and healthy new-born infants.
Observation and care of the new-born requiring special care, including those born pre-term, post-term, underweight or ill.
Care of women with pathological conditions in the fields of gynecology and obstetrics.
Initiation into care in the field of medicine and surgery. Initiation shall include theoretical instruction and clinical practice.

ADMISSION

General criteria:

• Bachelor Degree in General Nursing

• Certificate of registration in the Register Nurses of general nursing practice

• Certificate of licensure to practice the profession of general nursing

The evaluation of those applicants will be according to the following criteria:

• BSc in General Nursing (35%)

• Success in introductory written examination (35%)

• Success in oral personal interview (30%)

Candidates are informed about the new program via an announcement by the department of students’ affairs through the CUT website. The announcement includes information about the date of commencement of the program, the available positions, criteria for the selection of candidates, costs, the procedure for the submission of the application and the accompanying documents required (online), the final date for the submission of the application, contact information, and other relevant information.

Based on the rules and regulations of the Students’ affairs, the evaluation and selection of candidates is made from a three-member committee which is defined by the Council of the Department of Nursing, after motion of the Post-Graduate programs committee of the department. The committee informs through the secretariat of the Department the candidates whose application was timely and met the required criteria, both by phone and by electronic mail, for the date, the location and time of the written examination. On the basis of the performance in the written examination, the successful candidates are informed of the date of the interview, the location and the time. The interviews are made by the committee who uses a common structure of questions to interview all candidates’ for more subjective and unbiased conclusions. The committee then awards points to all criteria for the selection (BSc degree, exam result, interview result), makes the list of the candidates with the highest points on top, follows a descending classification and selects the number of available positions from top to bottom. The committee keeps minutes at all stages of the selection procedure. The minutes are approved by the Department of Nursing and the Department of Students Affairs.

Course Purpose and Objectives

Upon completion of the course through modern teaching / learning processes and applications, students will develop critical awareness and skills in the analysis of evidence based, documented midwifery knowledge, interconnection with relevant scientific fields and development of standard strategies of approach in the management and care of normal pregnancy, puerperium, and neonatal period.

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to critically analyse research data and develop scientifically documented approaches to monitoring and caring for healthy pregnant women, mothers, and their newborns. In particular, they will develop critical awareness and skills to:

●Distinguish and critically evaluate the individualized biological, psycho-emotional, social, cultural and personal needs of the woman/family during pregnancy and puerperium.

●Assess the actual and potential care needs of the fetus/newborn and compose model strategies for caring, monitoring and promoting its health.

Analytical processing and deepening into the data of physiology as well as the synthesis of new strategic approaches in the care and monitoring of pregnancy, puerperium, fetus and newborn.

Construction of scientific knowledge, skills and professional attitudes in the planning, organization, management and care of normal pregnancy, childbirth, fetus / newborn from the biological, psychological, emotional, social, cultural, environmental, and personal point of view of the pregnant, mother and family through the thematic units:

Pregnancy: physiology, diagnostic criteria, clinical and laboratory examinations, ultrasound screenings and examinations. Critical review of evidence-based approaches and specialized competencies in the care, prevention, health promotion and treatment of pregnant women.
Fetus / Newborn: normal newborn development and well-being, screening, clinical examinations, and monitoring. Postnatal newborn adaptation, immediate and subsequent care and monitoring of growth and health.
Puerperium: physiology, clinical monitoring and management, prevention and treatment of postpartum problems, health promotion and wellness education.
Clinical Practice: Application of research based clinical care and monitoring of pregnant women, fetuses, postnatal mothers, and newborns. Documentation of clinical practice in compliance with the manual "Evidence Based practice."

Course Purpose and Objectives

With the completion of the course through modern teaching , learning processes and applications, students will develop critical awareness and skills in the analytical processing and deepening of the data of anatomy, physiology, philosophy, and history of normal human reproduction, as well as synthesis of new strategies of approach to management and care of normal childbirth.

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to critically analyze research data and compose scientifically documented approaches to monitoring and care during normal childbirth. In particular, they will develop critical awareness and skills to:

The course involves the analytical processing and deepening into the data of anatomy, physiology, philosophy, and history of normal human reproduction, as well as the synthesis of new strategies of approach to management and care during normal childbirth from biological, psychological emotional, social, cultural, environmental as well as personal perspectives of the woman in labor and her family through the thematic units:

related to conception and childbearing, anatomy and physiology: female and male genital system, conception, fertilization, fetal development, pelvis, pelvic organs, pelvic-genital canal, pelvic floor, fetal skull, female breast.
Historical of Midwifery science and profession.
Philosophical approaches to childbirth and midwifery care.
Physiological, endocrinological, mechanical approaches to childbirth: signs of onset of childbirth, parameters that affect the progress of childbirth, mechanism of childbirth.
Childbirth management and care: initial reception and management, childbirth stages, clinical examinations and measurements, record-keeping of interventions, autonomous care and collaboration with a health team.
Immediate neonatal care, keeping birth records
The role of the father in childbirth

Course Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide Midwifery students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the application of epidemiological research on reproductive and perinatal health. During the course, the students will familiarize themselves with various epidemiological indicators (prevalence, incidence, mortality rate/ratio etc) and measures (risk ratio, odds ratio, attributable risk etc) and will get acquainted with perinatal and reproductive health statistics, national, European and international epidemiological data monitoring systems and initiatives (e.g. national birth and death statistics, national and European perinatal statistics, epidemiologic surveillance and cluster investigations e.g. congenital anomalies). Students will have the opportunity to appreciate the large disparities between high-income and low-income countries in perinatal and reproductive health and learn about the various international initiatives to bridge the "gap" such as for example the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Objectives: During the course, midwifery students will (a) be introduced to published epidemiological research and other sources of epidemiological data and information (e.g. reports and datasets of governmental, non-governmental and international organizations, etc.), (b) read, familiarize themselves and critically appraise published articles of various epidemiological designs on selected reproductive and perinatal health issues, and (c) appreciate the importance of research evidence, systematic reviews/ meta-analyses and clinical guidelines in the context of Evidence-based Midwifery Practice. Even though the course requires some prior contact with epidemiology and biostatistics (at undergraduate level), students will have the opportunity to refresh their memory and strengthen their knowledge and skills in relation to epidemiological study design, interpretation of epidemiological findings (bias and confounding), and statistical analysis and presentation of epidemiological/ quantitative data.

The ultimate goal of the course is for the student to develop an understanding of the basic principles, concepts and especially methods of epidemiological and other quantitative research and the central role it holds in the context of Evidence-based midwifery practice. Students will be given the opportunity to select a research topic/ issue of epidemiological importance and interest to Midwifery practice and for which they will be expected to identify the best available evidence in the international literature and present their findings to the rest of the group.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, midwifery students will:

(a) gain a deeper understanding of the different epidemiological profile in relation to reproductive and perinatal health between low- and high-income countries

(b) acquire skills in the interpretation of key reproductive and perinatal epidemiological indicators as well as methods of epidemiological monitoring and surveillance in perinatal health

(c) become familiar with the principles, concepts and methods of descriptive epidemiology in the context of investigating and capturing the epidemiological pattern of reproductive and perinatal health events and conditions at local, national and international level

(e) be able to read, understand, evaluate and interpret the statistical analysis and presentation of results in published perinatal / reproductive epidemiology research of various study designs (cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, trials, meta-analysis)

(f) acquire skills in the critical appraisal of epidemiological studies (bias, confounding) and interpretation of findings of various study designs (cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, trials, meta-analysis)

(g) and more generally, appreciate the role of epidemiological and other quantitative research as a fundamental tool and an integral part of evidence-based midwifery practice and public health

Introduction to Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology - Global Overview of Maternal and Neonatal Mortality. Millennium Goals, Sustainable Development Goals and other international initiatives (Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health). National action plans / strategies – SMART targets and indicators.
Descriptive indicators of perinatal and reproductive health. Perinatal health in Cyprus (Health Monitoring Unit, HR) and in Europe (European Perinatal Health Report - EuroPeristat).
Screening and diagnostic tests - Validity (sensitivity and specificity, positive and negative predictive value).
Study design in descriptive and analytical epidemiological research: (1) Cross-sectional studies, (2) Prospective/ Cohort/ Birth Cohort studies, (3)Case-control studies, and (4) Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) and other experimental designs.
Issues of interpretation of epidemiological findings and reasoning (selection and information bias, confounding, reverse causality, etc). Critical appraisal of published epidemiological articles and Discussion. Suggested articles for discussion will be posted on moodle. Students are expected to study the material before the meeting.
Case study 1 - Presentation of the methodology and findings of the cross-sectional and longitudinall research study “BrEaST start in life”: Implementation of the "10 steps" for successful breastfeeding in maternity clinics in Cyprus. Prevalence and determinants of exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding up to the 6th month of the child's life.

Teaching Methodology

The course is taught through lectures, workshops and / or seminar presentations and is Theoretical (50%), Laboratory, including the use of the statistical package SPSS - Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (20%) and Seminar-based (30%), including teacher and student presentations.

On a weekly basis, students are given additional selected material related to the thematic unit of the week. There are dedicated office hours for student support with the material as well as personalized tutorial guidance for the course assignments.

In relation to the course assignments, the students are expected to choose a topic of epidemiological interest in Midwifery (reproductive and perinatal health) and prepare a ppt presentation which they present to the rest of the group, with references to:

(a) the descriptive epidemiology of the problem (outcome of interest) i.e. Who? Where? When? based on published literature and / or other epidemiological data from an international and national perspective, providing where possible data on Cyprus and /or Greece,

(b) evidence about the association of the chosen outcome of interest with a identified risk factor/determinant as reflected in systematic reviews/ meta-analyses of epidemiological etiological studies; and

(c) effectiveness of specific preventive and/or therapeutic interventions and / or maternal health prevention / promotion strategies / policies (depending on chosen topic)

References to (b) and (c) are expected to be both general (that is, briefly covering the range of different determinants and interventions studied in the literature) as well as specific to a chosen risk factor and intervention. The presentation of best available evidence on the selected risk factor/intervention is expected to be based on findings of systematic reviews, meta-analyzes and / or published guidelines.

Course Purpose and Objectives	The aim of this course is to provide the postgraduate midwifery student both the theoretical foundation as well as mainly the practical skills and competences needed in midwifery and healthcare research both within the empirical/ quantitative as well as qualitative/interpretative research paradigm. Emphasis in given on practical issues around designing and conducting a study from drafting the research protocol and study design/methods to data collection and analysis, critical appraisal and interpretation of findings in the context of limitations and potential threads to internal and external validity of study findings. The course consists of a series of seminars, workshops and student presentations where students have the opportunity to approach original research problems as a group, discuss the material presented, exchange ideas and interact with course instructors, invited speakers and among themselves, target the main methodological issues and/or study design aspects and/or propose interpretations and solutions.
Learning Outcomes	Through an integrative view of the research process, the overarching purpose of this course is to become acquainted with the latest research studies at national and/or international level, to appreciate important developments in Midwifery research, to encourage critical thinking, enhance skills in scientific writing/presentation and guide the students into finalizing and presenting their own research thesis protocol. By the end of the course, the student: will come in contact with various methods in quantitative and qualitative research in Midwifery and familiarize themselves with all the stages of the research process will appreciate the importance of robust study design and methodology, gain an understanding of issues around data collection and analysis methods that can affect the validity of the study findings and be in the position to offer interpretation of research findings in the light of the strengths and limitations of a study will develop, through a problem-based and peer-review environment, critical thinking and research appraisal skills will cultivate practical skills in preparing and presenting their own research study protocol to their peers and practical experience in explaining and defending their choices (study design, tools, sampling etc)

Course Content	This is a seminar-series class with the contribution of both invited speakers and students themselves. The content of the course varies across cohort intake to align with research that is currently in progress at the Department and the set of invited speakers that semester. The course is structured around a series of lectures, seminar presentations, round-table discussions and/or workshops, where either (a) specific theoretical (e.g. determinants of breastfeeding) and/or methodological topics (e.g. Delphi studies) are presented, examined and discussed, or (b) original research studies and/or research protocols are presented either from the published literature or currently in progress at the Department and elsewhere by invited guests and students themselves (course assignment 1). Invited speakers include faculty members and/or doctoral candidates. Course instructors chair the sessions and facilitate the discussion. Through the exchange of ideas and the interaction of students-speaker-coordinator, each session offers a targeted analysis and discussion of research findings and/or methodological issues in the context of the critical appraisal. As part of the course, the students also have the opportunity to present their research protocol to the group, explain and defend their methodological choices and thus, through a peer-review process, finalise their protocols to be submitted promptly for bioethics approval.

Assessment	Course assignment 1 - 40% Each student prepares and delivers a presentation of a published research article to the rest of the group. Students are expected to identify an article of their own choice which they consider an important development in Midwifery research/practice and ideally related to the topic of their own proposed thesis (published in the last 5 years, in a peer- reviewed journal, in English, irrespective of research methods used, etc). Students are assessed on the basis of the quality of the presentation and their response to the discussion that follows. Each student is paired to another student who is expected to critically appraise the article before the session and lead/facilitate the discussion. Course Objective	Upon completion of the course through modern teaching / learning processes and applications, students will evaluate and compare international data in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of obstetric emergencies at an individual and health care team responsibility.
Learning Results	Students are expected to: -recognize on time potential and actual forms of obstetric emergencies, such as: abnormal positions and presentations, dystocias, complications of childbirth and puerperium, and apply evidence based guidelines and standardized procedures for their treatment. - critically assess and make clinical decisions to deal with, call the health team, coordinate the team and register and keep records. -evaluate, investigate and take the necessary emergency measures in the absence of a doctor, coordinate rescue, management, and care and assist with medical intervention - apply treatments and medical instructions in dealing with emergencies -simulated management of manual removal of the placenta, breech delivery, shoulder dystocia, abnormal positions and presentations of the fetus, management of shock in obstetrics and maternal resuscitation. - apply laboratory and clinical midwifery care to women with surgical births (forceps, vacuum extraction, cesarean section)
