Description
The project is funded by the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus and implemented by the Cyprus University of Technology. The project aims at (a) studying the ways and conventions by which conflict and violence is portrayed in Cypriot television news, (b) familiarizing journalists and citizens with an ‘open society’ approach towards conflict and violence and (c) developing new skills and attitudes among journalists regarding the use of the internet for creating participatory forms of journalism and actively engaging the public in public expression and discussion through the media.

Description
This research project has a triple focus: on news organizations, on journalists, and on the product of their work, news. Within this research endeavor, the challenges the news organizations are facing and the drastic modifications they are undergoing in the light of convergence dynamics, are studied. At the same time, it is investigated how the tasks, roles, self-perception and professional cultures of journalists are (re)appropriated in the internet era. Thirdly, it is studied how the practices related to this new reality are reflected into the news product.  The study, currently performed in Greece, is about to expand to include Cyprus, and involves content analysis and in-depth interviews. Focus groups with news professionals and participant observation within news organizations are also planned for the future.

Description
WJS (http://www.worldsofjournalism.org) is an international research network founded to study comparatively journalism cultures on a global scale (Director: Prof. Thomas Hanitzsch, University of Munich) and is a joint effort of researchers from more than 80 countries. The project’s main objective is to develop the conceptual and methodological tools to study journalism cultures across countries. The CIS department has joined the network and is currently designing the national study of Cypriot journalists.

Description
The research project on the foreign correspondents in Cyprus is part of a pan-European study that involves researchers and academics from 35 countries. Being the first of its kind it aims at the mapping of foreign correspondents and their reporting in Europe in terms of human geography, of working conditions, as well as of the factors and forces that affect the news coverage in Europe and for Europe, in a period of rapid and radical changes in the field of journalism.
