Dr. Argyro Argyrou works as a research associate at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geoinformatics of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). Her research focuses on spatial analysis, cartography, artificial intelligence, Earth observation, and geoinformatics, with applications in archaeological research and cultural heritage landscapes. Within her research activities, she participates in European and national research projects related to the innovative use of remote sensing technologies and machine learning for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage.
She completed her undergraduate studies as a Graphic Arts Technologist at the University of West Attica. She then obtained an MSc in GIS from the University of Leeds (School of Geography), where her dissertation focused on the spatial analysis of genetic hereditary diseases in Cyprus. As a graduate of the University of Leeds, she participates in the School of Geography Mentoring Scheme, supporting new students in geoinformatics-related topics.
She obtained her PhD from the Department of Civil Engineering and Geoinformatics at the Cyprus University of Technology under the supervision of Professor Athos Agapiou. Her doctoral research focused on the detection and classification of archaeological surface ceramics using low-altitude remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms, developing an innovative methodology for mapping archaeological finds through artificial intelligence.
Alongside her academic career, since 2003 she has been working at the Department of Lands and Surveys of Cyprus, in the Cartography Branch, where she is involved in the processing and analysis of geospatial data, the management of cartographic databases, and the production of cartographic products. She has extensive experience in GIS (collection, processing, and analysis of spatial data) and cartography.
As part of her research activities, she has participated in projects such as ENSURE, ENGINEER, CONNECTING, and DEPLOYED, contributing to the development and application of innovative methods for the detection, monitoring, and protection of cultural heritage through remote sensing and artificial intelligence.
She is also a member of the Earth Observation Cultural Heritage Research Lab at CUT, the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage, the MNEMOSYNE Research Centre (Digital Cultural Heritage Unit), and the ESRI User Community for Geospatial Authorities.
