Celebration of the International Year of Nurses and Midwives 2020
Celebration of the International Year of Nurses and Midwives 2020
In the context of the proclamation by the World Health Organization of 2020 as the International Year of Nurses and Midwives, the Department of Nursing of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), wanting to honor the work of Nurses and Midwives of Cyprus, has created an interactive trip in space and time, where the visitor will have the opportunity to get acquainted with some facts from the history of Nursing and Obstetrics in Cyprus, but also to visit online some of the premises of the Department of Nursing at TEPAK.
Due to the restrictive protection measures against the pandemic, and since a physical presence event is not offered, virtual reality was a necessary, but at the same time a pioneering choice. The project is carried out under the high protection of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Council of Nurses and Midwives of Cyprus, the Pancyprian Association of Nurses and Midwives, as well as the Patticheion Historical Archive and Study Center of the Pattiheio Municipal Museum.
Through this tribute, the Department of Nursing wants to honor the history and the valuable work performed daily by the nurses and midwives of Cyprus and their timeless contribution to the Cyprus society. In the year 2020, the world honors nurses and midwives at the same time that it is plagued by the COVID-19 pandemic, where nurses and midwives, always fighting on the front lines, are called to defend the supreme good of citizens' health, which forms the foundation upon which the happiness of people and the real forces of a state are built.
Although the profession of Nurse and Midwife pre-existed for thousands of years in Cyprus, an important milestone in the history of Nursing was the operation of the then School of Nurses and Midwives in 1945, initially with the commencementof two years of training and later in 1954 with three years of training in General Nursing where it continued its operation until 2010.
However, a key milestone in the history of Nursing Education in Cyprus was the inclusion of Nursing at the Cyprus University of Technology in 2007. The Nursing Department of TEPAK is a national reference point for Nursing education. It provides training programs that comply with the European Union’s guidelines, considering the country's needs, priorities, system and health policies. Every year, about 60-80 scientific nurses graduate from the undergraduate program, ready to staff hospitals, clinics and community structures, with a complete scientific, theoretical and practical education, as well as communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, research and leading skills in the field of health in the 21st century. The Department also offers a range of postgraduate programs that provide advanced clinical and academic skills in Intensive Care and Emergency, Oncology, Mental Health, Community Nursing and Obstetrics, as well as a doctoral program, thus supporting continuing professional, scientific and academic development.
It is impressive that with just 13 years of life the work of the Department of Nursing is recognized internationally since for three consecutive years, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, otherwise known as the Shanghai List, ranks the Department in the 100-150 best Nursing Departments internationally, from which 58 only at European level from 15 countries, putting Cyprus high on the international map.
