On the occasion of the World Day for Women in Science, the Cyprus University of Technology, with a view to encouraging women and young girls towards engaging in science, presents women scientists being employed at the University and devoted to their research activities.

Dr. Ioli Nikolaidou is a member of the Specialized Teaching Staff at the Department of Communication and Internet Studies at CUT. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Technology from Concordia University (2009), in Montreal, Canada, a postgraduate degree in Educational Technology from Boston University (2002) in Boston USA, where she has been a Fulbright scholar, and a Bachelor in Educational Science degree with specialization in Natural Sciences, from the Department of Sciences of the Primary Education Department of the University of Cyprus (2000). She has been researching the scientific field of educational technology over the last 15 years.
The research interests of Dr. Nicolaidou during the last 15 years focus on the design, application and evaluation of new learning and communication technologies and the examination of the effectiveness, potential contribution and constraints on different levels of education, from primary to tertiary education. In particular, her interest focuses on the integration of emerging media as cognitive tools in formal and informal environments. More recently, she is concerned with assessing children's skills in digital literacy such as internet safety and design of interactive learning environments in order to develop these skills in young children. She also deals with the design and evaluation of educational applications for mobile devices. Her research work includes more than 60 articles in international journals and international conference proceedings.
The scientific field with which Dr. Nicolaidou deals is the educational technology. More specifically, she deals with the examination of the ways in which emerging media may be designed to support the learning process and increase motivation and active involvement of the learner in the learning process. Some examples of emerging media are educational applications for mobile devices ( such as smart phones and laptops with tablets, digital games designed around a learning goal, interactive learning environments designed on the basis of modern learning theories. The integration of new media into real-life classroom conditions in typical education at all levels, from nursery school to university, helps us to identify the ways in which learning can become more effective and efficient. The ultimate goal is to use technology, even in conditions of informal learning, aiming to develop 21st century skills to students in the field of digital literacy, such as internet security, computer literacy, information technology literacy, media literacy and question-learning .
