With great success a special event was held dedicated to the European Day of Speech Therapy on the subject of "Augmentative and Alternative Communication" on March 7, 2018, by the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Cyprus University of Technology. The event was sponsored by the Cyprus Association of Registered Speech Therapists. More than 100 participants attended the event including speech therapists, special education teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, parents, students and other professionals.
Talks on the subject of Augmentative and Alternative Communication were given by Dr. Ioannis Vogindroukas, Speech Therapist and Dr. Eliada Pampoulou, Speech Therapist, specialist in Assistive Technology. Specifically, the talks were on "Communication: Augmentative and Alternative Forms" and "Technology at the Service of Augmentative and Alternative Communication".
The term Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is used to describe communication methods and strategies that can be used to enhance or supplement, temporarily or permanently, the communication ability of people with significantly limited or no verbal communication. Developmental disorders such as Autistic Spectrum Disorders, genetic syndromes such as Down Syndrome, neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, acquired neurological disorders such as Aphasia are just some of the causes that can deprive a person of the ability to express needs, feelings and opinions, and the ability to ask questions and engage in daily life activities.
Comprehensive evaluation of the person with limited or no verbal communication, as well as the documented and appropriate intervention that follows, allows the individual to participate independently, actively, effectively and equally in society since through AAC the individual will be given access to communicative methods and technologies.
As a result of the personalized and effective intervention, the impact is on, among others, the promotion of communication, successful social interaction, effective learning as well as the integration of the individual into society.
