Within the framework of the Activity «Port Collaborative Decision Making (PortCDM)» of the European Research Programme «Sea Traffic Management (STM) Validation», which will be completed by the end of 2018, the research team of PortCDM headed by Professor Mikael Lind, who is a member of the Swedish Research Institute RISE Viktoria, has recently published a number of articles in Fathom World News regarding recent developments in information sharing and collaborative decision making at the ports and the relative benefits, while promoting at the same time the STM/ PortCDM concept to the international maritime community.
The fifth article in the series, https://fathom.world/proving-port-port-communication-can-save-shipowners-money/, has been authored in close collaboration with researchers from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and published on March 10th, 2018. Fathom World (https://fathom.world/) is an online news and analysis service dedicated to providing insight and knowledge on the transformation of shipping.
The article highlights the important role of the port of Limassol related to Short Sea Shipping operations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the need of improvement of situational awareness and collaborative decision making among all the involved stakeholders. This can be achieved through real-time communication between the various port actors, between the ships and the ports, and between the ports themselves in a port-2-port fashion.
The article brings forward the instrumental role of the European port of Limassol in the Eastern Mediterranean, having direct connections to many other ports of Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Greece.

The CUT is the only official partner from Cyprus participating in the Programme STM, but always in close collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, the Cyprus Port Authority, the port of Limassol, the private companies DP World, Eurogate and P&O Maritime (that currently handle the operations at the port of Limassol following the privatization in January 2017), the Department of Merchant Shipping, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, the Cyprus Shipping Association and the private company Tototheo Group, that has also supported CUT in various other Research Programs.
