The high quality and international recognition of the research output of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is reflected in the inclusion of eleven (11) of its faculty members among the top researchers worldwide.
As an indicator of the recognition and reach of research work internationally, the tools of citations attracted and of related indexes, such as the Hirsch index (H-index), are widely used. These tools are indicative but very often are misused. Recent studies1,2 of a Stanford’s University (USA) group, headed by Professor John P.A. Ioannides, achieved a universal normalization of citation metrics by introducing a composite citation index which integrates the total number of citations, the H-index, a co-authorship-adjusted index, number of citations to papers as single author, number of citations to papers as single or first author, and number of citations to papers as single, first, or last author.
Based on these studies, the Ioannides group generated data lists2 (Data for updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators 2020) with the top 100.000 researchers in the world from every scientific discipline, as well those ranked in the top 2% in their main subfield discipline, during their academic career. For the application of the method developed, the SCOPUS data base is used.
In the list of the 100.000 top researchers, the following four faculty members of CUT are included (in descending rank order): Professor Soteris Kalogirou, Professor Pantelis Kelires, Professor Fotis Panayides, and Professor Vasilis Gekas (retired).
In the list of those ranked in the top 2% in their main subfield discipline, the above mentioned and in addition the following seven faculty members of CUT are included (in descending rank order): Professor Phaedon Kyriakidis, Professor Andreas Lanitis, Assistant Professor Nikolaos Tzortzakis, Associate Professor Theodoros Zachariadis, Assistant Professor Soterios Chatzis, Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis, and Assistant Professor Athos Agapiou.
Cyprus University of Technology congratulates its faculty members who received this important distinction, which reflects the excellent research work performed at the university, as well as the high ranking position of CUT in the universal ranking lists (position 301-350 in the Times Ηigher Εducation World University Rankings list in the last three years, and first among the universities in Cyprus and Greece).
