Kimonos Art Center, in collaboration with the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology, has presented, from the 6th to the 12th of September the 4th edition of the international animation festival of Pafos, The Animattikon Project 2021.
During the festival, which was held in the outdoors event space of the Center in Pafos, the audience had the opportunity to watch more than 80 selected films from more than 25 countries around the world. In parallel, esteemed guests, professionals of the animation industry, both from Cyprus and abroad, presented their work and organized lectures on various topics.
Besides supporting the festival in the organization two lectures on animation, one held by Cesar-awarded French producer Olivier Catherin and the other by the eminent journalist and animation historian Nancy Denney-Phelps and her husband, music composer for animated films, Nik Phelps, the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts was also present in the festival with the interactive VR installation “The Last Play”. The installation is a project created by a team of students of the Department, under the guidance of assistant professor Dr. Doros Polydorou, who presented a lecture on alternative storytelling through new media and VR in particular. The lecture by Dr. Polydorou was the opening event of the festival.
In addition to this, the festival welcomed musicians George Bizios and Omiros Miltiadous for an improvisational performance accompanying the screening of four short films from the original Superman series by the Fleischer Studio, celebrating the 80-year anniversary of the release of the first film of the series in 1941 by Paramount Pictures.
During the final evening of the festival, a parallel screening event was hosted by the Rialto Theater in Limassol. A series of animated films for children were screened along with a selection of films from the archives of The Animattikon Project. At the same time, in Pafos, the audience had the opportunity to watch the screenings of the final part of the official selection of the festival and to attend the Golden Hat Awards ceremony, during which the winners of this year’s competitive sections were announced. The ceremony marked the end of this year’s edition of the festival and was followed by a closing party at the CRAFT bar, during which Nik Phelps along with guitarist Nick Azinas performed improvisational covers of compositions ranging from jazz standards to heavy metal ballads with a saxophone and a guitar.
The festival was supported by the hotel Almyra in Pafos, the Rialto Theater in Limassol, the Cyprus Animation Association (CAA - ASIFA Cyprus), the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency / Invest Cyprus and the House of Arts and Letters of Pafos.
