On World AIDS Day, οn the 1st of December, the Department of Fine Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology is hosting the event Κυπριακά Σπίρτα Αφροδίτης, inspired by the poetry of Elias Konstantinou (1956–1995). The event is curated by CEL in collaboration with Dr Garbiel Koureas, Assistant Professor at the Department of Fine Arts, Cyprus University of Technology, and leader of the research programme Queer Arts of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Konstantinou’s premature death from AIDS, the erotic content of his poetry and his uncompromising political thought have been identified as reasons he is not known to a wider audience. The event borrows its title from a poem by Konstantinou from his collection Αρσενικός Χαλκός (Themelio, 1984) and seeks to continue the discussion around the critical reception of his work, raising questions on matters of visibility of queer individuals and their creative output.
Participants to the discussion include Pantelis Georgiou, Dr. Stavros Stavrou Karayianni and Anastassis Pissourios. Poetry reading, Dimitris Chimonas. Video projection, Polys Peslikas.
Professor Dr. Constantinos Phellas, Senior Vice-rector, University of Nicosia, presented the research he led, titled “Psychological and Social Needs of People Living with AIDS in Cyprus”.
Free rapid HIV testing will be available at the event in collaboration with Κ.Υ.F.A. HIV/AIDS Support Centre

The event will be accompanied by the publication Κυπριακά Σπίρτα Αφροδίτης edited by CEL and Dr Gabriel Koureas with poetry by creative individuals experimenting today with the poetic word.
CEL is Christos Kyriakides, Elena Parpa and Leontios Toumpouris. The group was formed in October 2020 to explore queerness in the Cypriot landscape.
Under CUT regulations a Safe Pass is required for attending the event.
