On Wednesday 27/04/2022, the first official piloting of the research project "OenoWatch" took place with absolute success in the vineyards of the “Ekfraseis” winery in Chandria. During the first pilot phase in the field, UAV test flights were carried out and the functions of the equipment and software of the integrated system were tested.
The Cyprus University of Technology participates in the research project "OenoWatch" in the framework of the Restart Program 2016-2020 of the Cyprus Research & Innovation Foundation. The “OenoWatch” project aims to study, develop, implement, and pilot a holistic phytosanitary and plant protection system, based on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, a series of cutting-edge technologies, and the establishment of a Competence Center for Precision Viticulture. During the project, a prototype UAS will be constructed equipped with airborne sensors to produce remote sensing-based agricultural indices for the vineyards monitored. Thanks to timely diagnosis and targeted application of plant protection, the environmental damage will be reduced while achieving better health conditions for wine-growing professionals (due to the remote monitoring of pesticides).
The CUT team consists of researchers from the Department of Civil Engineering and Geoinformatics under the coordination of Professor Phaedon Kyriakidis. The “OenoWatch” Project Consortium also includes the European University of Cyprus, ‘DRONINT,’ EUROSUCCESS Consulting, the Development Agency of Lemesos, and the Cypriot Winery “Ekfraseis”.
