Cyprus University of Technology hosted an introduction seminar for piloting the VR Learning Environment application developed by the project Virtual Children´s Hospital for Learning Pediatric Nursing, in collaboration with CUTing Edge

In February 2025, students from the Nursing Department at Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), who are currently in their 6th semester and enrolled in the course NUR_353 Nursing Care for Children, took part in the introduction seminar for the use of the application developed by the Erasmus+ project Virtual Children's Hospital for Learning Pediatric Nursing (acronym VLPN), together with members of the project’s research team. The event offered students an opportunity not only to learn more about the project, but also to view a live demonstration by Mrs Christiana Nicolaou (Partner Scientific Coordinator - CUT) of the interactive application (VRLE).

During the demonstration, students and members of the research team were informed of the different functionalities of the application and given a tour of the four developed health care rooms, in which pediatric nursing skills can be practiced: room 1) Admission of child to a hospital, room 2) Heath care of child facing respiratory issues, room 3) Preparation of medicine for children, room 4) Neonatal care unit. When students enter the virtual pediatric hospital, they have the opportunity through innovative interactive teaching and learning methods to safely practice their pediatric nursing skills, in situations that simulate reality.

Additionally, participants were informed how to navigate the built-in dashboard that includes learning material (presentations, articles, videos, tables/checklists) on subjects examined within the VRLE rooms.

Imperative, to the use of VR technologies, is confidence and competence in using Virtual Reality (VR) tools. During the introduction session students were able to enter the VRLE to practice tasks in pediatric nursing, gaining confidence in using VR tools. The opportunity was welcomed by the students and created great excitement for the VRLE capacity and their participation in the project.

In recent years, VR has become an exciting tool in education, offering students unique and immersive ways to learn, practice new skills, and experience things they might not otherwise be exposed to. The VLPN project promotes this methodology, and the introduction session provided the foundation upon which students will further build confidence in using VR tools, aiding their VLPN learning journey, for enhancing their pediatric nursing skills.

Special thanks are given to CUTing Edge for hosting the event (A space that aims to provide an inspirational place for people to embrace technology and prepare them for today’s competitive business and working environment). Additionally, gratitude is expressed to Mr Dimitrios Boglou (Director at CUTing Edge) for his cooperation and Mrs Savvina Markidou (Equipment Supervisor, IT Support at CUTing Edge), who led the students’ practical segment and for her technical support and guidance throughout the seminar. It is with great pleasure that we will continue our collaboration with CUTing Edge, Mr Dimitrios Boglou and Mrs Savvina Markidou during the piloting of the VRLE application.
