Professor Toula Onoufriou is a Professor of Infrastructure Reliability and Management in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at the Cyprus University of Technology, Head of EMERGE CoE Research Group and Academic Visitor at Imperial College (UK). She is also the President of the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company which is the Commercial and Technical Arm of the Republic of Cyprus on Exploration and Exploitation of Hydrocarbons. She has a unique combination of experience from academia and the offshore oil and gas industry internationally where she held several positions of high responsibility (Vice Rector, [...]President, Head of Department, Director of Research, Head of Research Centre and Senior Consultant) and she recorded significant professional activity, contribution and recognition at national and international level.

Research Interests

Her research interests focus on on the digitization of marine and coastal energy infrastructure, smart proactive management of infrastructure systems and networks with applications in oil and gas structures and bridges and in the management of a sustainable marine environment. Also working in the area of safety and environmental protection of offshore oil and gas operations and has an interest in the research, development and application of innovative methods in engineering education aiming at developing complimentary, professional and entrepreneurial skills in engineering graduates and researchers, essential skills for future industry leaders.

Professional Experience

She had a pivotal role in the creation, establishment and management of a new university as the first Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at the Cyprus University of Technology, a new national oil and gas company as the first President of the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company, new departments and research centres in universities and major international oil and gas company as Founding Head and Deputy Head of Departments, Senior Consultant, Director of Research and Founder of Research Centres at the University of Surrey (UK), at Haliburton Brown & Root (UK) and the Cyprus University of Technology. In all cases she played a leading role in shaping their vision and strategic plans and was pivotal in their implementation and management and she was instrumental in forging and coordinating successful active international collaborations (Joint Industry Porgrammes, Major Projects and Networks) between academia, industry, government and international organisations.

Contribution and Recognition

She has been appointed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministerial Council in several positions of national professional contribution as President, Vice Chairman or Member of National Bodies advising the government on national strategy for energy, oil and gas developments, research, innovation and entrepreneurship. She also served on many other national (UK, Cyprus) and international committees (membership by invitation only) on research, innovation, university education and other specialist areas. She is the Chairman of the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Congress Conference & Exhibition - EMC initiated in 2020 in Nicosia, Cyprus, under the auspices of H.E. The President of the Republic of Cyprus with a focus on “Cyprus the Sustainable Energy Hub in the Eastern Mediterranean”. She was Invited Expert Speaker at many international high level events and conferences including the United States Congress and the European Commission on Oil and Gas Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and on Smart Proactive Management of Infrastructure Systems.

Distinctions and Awards

International professional distinctions and awards include the EGYPS 2020 “Women in Energy Leadership Award” for the Mediterranean and North Africa region in recognition of her contribution to the Energy industry, academia, public sector and her efforts on enhancing regional collaboration on Energy related matters; the Stanley Gray Award by the Institute of Marine Engineers UK for the best publication in marine technology; and the award of the prestigious SmartEN Marie Curie ITN Programme on “Smart Management for Sustainable Human Environment”. Also invited Expert Speaker at many high level international fora including United States Congress, European Commission and international conferences on oil and gas developments and smart proactive management of infrastructure systems.
