Thomas Kalpakoglou is a PhD candidate in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics Engineering under the supervision of Associate Professor Stylianos Yatros. His thesis focuses on the experimental study of the mechanical properties of metal foams and metal foam assemblies of hollow spheres under the influence of tensile and shear loading.
Thomas Kalpakoglou is a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) with specialization in the construction sector. His thesis focused on the exploration of Teflon implants utilization in the spine of patients who had undergone herniated disc surgery. The observations that
[...]emerged in the context of this work formed the basis of the establishment of the company 3D Surgical Printing (3DSP) which developed three-dimensional (3D) personalized models of anatomical areas for pre-operative simulation exploiting the technology of 3D printing and artificial intelligence.
During his studies at AUTh he became a member of the Greek branch of I.A.E.S.T.E. Western Macedonia. Through this organization he did an internship at EMPA-Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology at the Zurich branch.
His research interests are focused on cellular materials, bio-materials and orthopedic engineering.
