Maria Kyranou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing since 2017. She completed her undergraduate studies in the Department of Nursing at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens followed by postgraduate studies (Master’s in Science) in the “Management of Health Care Services and Health Informatics” by the European Union’s Inter-University Collaboration Program (University of Athens and University of Piraeus). She holds a PhD from the School of Nursing at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), a pioneering institution regarding funding for nursing studies both in the US and worldwide. She participated in the design and [...]implementation of innovative nursing studies in Intensive Care Units and Oncology Departments. Between 2007 and 2009 she became the National Coordinator (Greece) for the international nursing study EUROPAIN.

She played a crucial role as a member of the Nursing Administration Team of Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki (Greece) for 15 years (2000-2015). She worked passionately for the implementation of nursing research in everyday practice and for this purpose established a network of clinical educators throughout the hospital. She co-founded teaching schools inside the hospital (European Rescusitation Council-ERC, Trauma Nursing Core Course-TNCC-Emergency Nurses Association-USA) and coordinated nursing clinical studies whose results have been published.

Her research interests include the facilitation of research implementation in nursing practice, the management of symptoms of patients with chronic illness and the holistic care of patients with complex problems. She envisions empowered patients assisted by interdisciplinary health care teams aiming at the restoration and promotion of their health.

Research

Research programmes

  • National Coordinator (Greece) for the International nursing study EUROPAIN. The study was funded by the European Society of Critical Care Medicine. Principal Investigator is Kathleen Puntillo, RN, Emeritus Professor of Nursing, from UCSF and Co-investigator is Elie Azoulay, MD, from Hospital Saint Louis Paris, France. The focus of the study is on “Procedural Pain during common procedures” in 33 countries. Each national coordinator recruits 15 ICUs from his/her country, coordinates data collection at a national level and participates in analysis and publication of results with Principal Investigators, 2009 to 2011.
  • Research member in a Nursing Study funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), investigating “Multiple symptoms in oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy”, 2010 to 2011.
  • Research member in the NIH funded nursing study: “Palliative of Thirst in Intensive Care Unit Patients”. The study’s main aim is to test a nursing intervention for thirst in critically ill patients, 2009 to 2011.
  • Research member in the NIH funded nursing study «SPIRIT- Examining symptom experiences of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients at high risk of dying», 2004-2007.
  • Member of the Research Team “BRIDGES”, Papageorgiou Hospital. Translation and validation of the “Distress Thermometer” by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN, USA), 2012 to present.
  • Principal Investigator of the European Union funded Grant on “Educating Educators”, Center for Professional Education, Papageorgiou General Hospital, 2003 (300 hours).
  • Principal Investigator of the European Union funded Grant on: “Clinical Educators”, Center for Professional Education, Papageorgiou Hospital, 300 hours, 2004, Thessaloniki, Greece.
  • “Daisy Project:  Nurses contributing to medical student’s education”.  Research Coordinator for the project in collaboration with the Medical School of Aristotle University and the Nursing Department of Papageorgiou Hospital.  Undergraduate medical students were receiving training from experienced nurses regarding clinical skills, communication with patients and clinical research in order to cover gaps of their undergaduate curriculum, 2002 to 2004.·Data Manager of European Union’s funded project BIOMED 2 titled ‘Autonomy, Privacy, and Informed Consent during Nursing Interventions” with the collaboration of 5 countries (Finland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Great Britain), University of Athens, Department of Nursing, 1999 to 2001.
