The Workshop “Terminology and Conceptualisation of Missed Nursing Care” of the COST-funded project “RATIONING – MISSED CARE: An international and multidimensional problem” took place on 27th March 2018 at Hotel Kapetanios Odyssia, hosted by Cyprus University of Technology(CUT).
The workshop gave the opportunity to the Nurse Managers and Nurses of General Hospitals, Mental Health Services and other health services in Cyprus and other countries to understand and discuss the concept of Missed Nursing Care (MNC) and the related factors.
Managers from the Ministry of Health and the Nursing Registering body have also actively participated.
During the first half of the day, Associate Prof Papastavrou, of CUT and Chair of the Rancare action welcome the participants and introduced them to the project and the concept. Professor Chara Spiliopoulou, of the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens continued with the ethics of care rationing in medicine. Associate Prof Anat Drach Zahavy, of the University of Haifa, Israel, presented the results of a study exploring the various definitions in different cultures that facilitated the understanding of the concept and the influencing factors in the participating countries. Finally, Associate Prof Michael Igoumenidis, from the Technical Educational Institute of Western Greece presented the philosophical dimension of the concept.
The participants continued discussions in 4 working groups:
- Defining the concept of Nursing care rationing (moderator: Maria Papaionnou, PhD (c) of CUT)
- Ethical Issues in relation with nursing care rationing (moderator: Stavros Vryonidis, PhD (c) of CUT)
- Violation of patient’s human rights in relation with nursing care rationing (moderator: Melina Evripidou PhD (c) of CUT)
- Nurses’ decision making prioritization in their work (moderator: Maria Dimitriadou, PhD (c) of CUT)
Through this event RANCARE action aims to raise awareness among health care professionals, Nurse managers and other nurses working in clinical setting, introducing and analysing the concept of MNC and providing the opportunity to all participants to exchange knowledge and experiences on the phenomenon.
