23rd Conference on Computer Assisted Language Learning (EuroCALL) Limassol, 24-27 August 2016


The proceedings of the annual conference on Computer Assisted Language Learning were completed on Saturday, August 27, 2016. The Conference, which is widely recognised at international level, was organized this year in Limassol by the Language Centre of the Cyprus University of Technology. Over 250 scientists - coming mainly from the fields of language teaching and new technologies in language learning - from 35 different countries, took part.

At the end of the conference, the participants expressed their satisfaction with their experience and knowledge gained through the presentations, speeches and conference workshops. At the same time, both the EuroCALL Committee as well as the participants underlined the professionalism and excellent organisational structure of the organising group - referring to the above conference as one of the best conferences which have ever been organised under the umbrella of that body.

The special theme for this year’s conference was titled “CALL Communities and Culture” giving the opportunity to researchers to share their experiences through the use of computers for language learning in their own socio-educational environment. Additionally, to analyse the way in which the specific field of research is growing and developing both locally as well as internationally, moving from traditional teaching models to the most contemporary methods which are being determined by the continuous emergence of new technologies for language teaching.

The key speeches were given by Mark Pegrum, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Australia, Panayiotis Zaphiris, Professor in the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts at the Cyprus University of Technology and Leila Kajee, Associate Professor of Educational Linguistics in the Faculty of Education at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. Besides the main key speeches, dozens of research papers were presented in areas such as language teaching assisted by mobile phone, teacher training, the production of language teaching materials using new technologies etc.

The programme also included a tour of the old town of Limassol and a formal dinner in which participants had the opportunity to come in contact with elements of the Cypriot culture. Finally, at the conference closing ceremony, Dr Salomi Papadima, the Director of the CUT Language Centre and chair of the local organising committee, after presenting a short briefing, handed the EuroCALL flag to the representative from the University of Southampton, where the next conference will be held
