On the 3rd of June 2021, a number of organisations from Cyprus took part in the 2nd "Cyprus Talks Green" webinar, presenting their actions regarding sustainability and the environment and social actions for the improvement of the quality of life in Cyprus.
British High Commissioner, Stephen Lillie, opened the webinar, stating: "As we approach the UK-Italy co-hosted COP26 climate summit this November, I'm pleased to join today's event to hear how local innovative initiatives are helping drive forward the green transition here in Cyprus”. Mr. Lillie stressed that “The fight against climate change is real and the time to act is now”.
The Ambassador of Italy, Andrea Cavallari, also addressed the event, highlighting the role of youth in the discussions for the climate. He also referred to the pre-COP26 meeting, which will be hosted in Rome, in September 2021.
The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), the Cyprus Energy Office, the Centre for Social Innovation, Friends of the Earth Cyprus, the Youth initiative, Green Deal for Cyprus and Gardens of the Future initiative all presented their work.
Dr. Alexandros Charalambides, Associate Professor of CUT, noted that the idea for the "Cyprus talks Green" series of discussions was initiated by the partners of EIT Climate-KIC in Cyprus (CUT, Chrysalis LEAP and Cyprus Energy Office) in December 2020, based on the realisation that even though various organisations in Cyprus are active in similar areas, yet collective actions and coordination between them are lacking. These discussions therefore aim to highlight together their actions and achieve a greater impact on society.
CUT presented the Maritime ClimAccelerator, supported by EIT Climate-KIC, which is expected to offer funding through its vast network of partners to start-ups with issues related to the maritime sector to address climate change. The start-ups will be invited to provide innovative solutions for the transition to sustainability in the shipping industry and will have the opportunity to present their ideas to investors, and shipping companies.
The Cyprus Energy Office presented two European projects called "Bricks of Skills" and "Pro Energy", sharing the goal of training in Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving. "Bricks of Skills", funded by the European ERASMUS+ programme, aims at educating and training technicians involved in energy efficiency systems applications. The project hopes to better exploit opportunities and build a better background of craftsmen and builders.
For its part, "Pro Energy" (Promoting Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings of the Balkan- Mediterranean Territory) is funded by the Interreg Balkan- Mediterranean Territory programme and looks to promote good practices in energy saving through training of civil servants.
