The #CyprusTalksGreen conference on financing the transition for a sustainable economy took place on Thursday 7 July 2022 in Nicosia and was followed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Info Day.
The conference,the fourth in the #CyprusTalksGreen conference series, aims to create a space for synergies and collaborations between key stakeholders active in the transition to a zero-carbon, climate-resilient society.
#CyprusTalksGreen is co-organised the Cyprus University of Technology and the EIT Climate-KIC Hub partners in Cyprus, Chrysalis LEAP and the Cyprus Energy Agency. This year’s fourth conference was also supported by the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN).
During her welcome speech, the Ambassador of the United States to Cyprus, Ms. Judith G. Garber, stated that climate change is real and that we need to take action now. She also stressed that the challenges Cyprus currently faces that need to be addressed "for a just transition that leaves no one behind" include transportation and electricity for heating and cooling.
Regarding businesses and the transition to a sustainable economy, she stated that businesses should be open about their carbon footprint and incentives should be created for businesses to achieve that transition.
The Mayor of Strovolos, Mr Andreas Papacharalambous, highlighted the priorities of the Municipality regarding waste management and mobility in an effort to "promote sustainability in a city built with anarchy" during his welcome speech.
During his speech, Mr. Philippos Soseilos, CEO of PwC in Cyprus, said that his vision for 2035 is for "Cyprus to be one of the best countries in the world in which to live, work and do business, " and that if we do not take action on this, we will significantly harm the Cyprus economy causing irreversible damage to its environment. Dr. Beatriz Camacho Avila from EIT Climate-KIC, presented the methodology developed for the co-creation of innovative policies available at https://eit.europa.eu/sites/default/files/jrc128771_01.pdf.
The aforementioned speeches were followed by interesting presentations by representatives of the public and private sector, academia, and organisations representing public opinion, from Cyprus, Malta, Israel and the USA. The audience had a chance to engage with the speakers and present their views on the topics discussed.
During the afternoon session, the EIT’s Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) presented their activities to promote innovation in their respective sectors were, in the form of a round table discussion. During this last session, the audience had the chance to meet representatives from EIT Climate-KIC, EIT InnoEnergy, EIT Manufacturing, EIT Raw Material and EIT Health from different EU countries.
Associate Professor Alexandros Charalambides, one of the organisers of the event, during his concluding remarks stated that “It is evident from the speeches that Cyprus has the ambition, know-how and funds to excel and be a protagonist in the race to decarbonization. And what we now need is to identify the areas that we excel in and capitalize on these, as a steppingstone for the full decarbonization of Cyprus.”
