Students with depression

Depression is a psychological condition that if it lasts more than two weeks can turn into Clinical Depression. It affects the person as a whole. It can change behavior, physical health and appearance and can affect academic performance. It is characterized by sadness, discomfort, fear, guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness. 

The first step is to recognize the symptoms of Depression. It is characterized by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, low self-esteem. Depression causes difficulty concentrating, remembering and making decisions. It causes a decrease in energy, difficulty sleeping. 

People with depression feel various physical discomforts, experience anger and tension, ask to be left alone, do not go to class as much as they should, may drink more alcohol than before and may talk about death.

Many factors can cause Depression. They include personal, environmental and biochemical-organic factors. Chemical imbalance in the brain plays an important role in the existence of depression. In such cases, drug therapy may be necessary. Other reasons include the death of a loved one, separation, change in financial circumstances, health problems, change in lifestyle, negative way of thinking, disappointment, etc.

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Feelings of sadness
  • Decreased Interest and Satisfaction
  • Emotional Charge
  • Anguish
  • Reduced Ability to Think, Concentrate, Make Decisions
  • Guilt

Physical Symptoms:

  • Various Bodily Pains
  • Headache
  • Sleep disorder
  • Overwork
  • Pain on the back
  • Significant change in diet resulting in weight loss or gain

Let the student know that you recognize their situation and can help with a referral to the Counseling Office and refrain from giving advice.
