Description:

The research will focus on developing novel computer vision and/or machine learning-based applications that can be used either in smart real spaces or in virtual reality applications. Within this scope real spaces refer to indoor environments (i.e. house, classroom, exhibition areas, shopping mall, etc) or outdoor environments (i.e. public roads, pedestrian crossings, cultural heritage sites, playing grounds, etc). Smart virtual reality applications refer to applications that incorporate machine learning and artificial intelligence for enhancing the overall user experience.  The topics will be addressed through research and development in the areas of computer vision and/or machine learning and their combination with emerging technologies such as mobile computing, ubiquitous computing, virtual and mixed reality.

Funding:

The successful candidate will be assigned to the “Visual Media Computing Research Lab” (https://vmc.cut.ac.cy/). Τhe successful candidate will have the opportunity to be employed and/or carry out part of his/her research work at the CYENS Centre of Excellence (cyens.org.cy). In parallel with his/her study the successful candidate may be employed in currently active research programs and/or be assigned teaching-related duties at the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts with appropriate reimbursement.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

  1. Postgraduate Degree of Master’s level from accredited Universities in Computer Science or Multimedia or Electronic Engineering or any related field.
  2. Excellent computer programming skills.
  3. Ability to organize and carry out research work independently.
  4. Very good knowledge of English language.
  5. Prior experience in research activities (i.e. publication record, submitting research proposals, participating in research programs) will be considered as an additional qualification.

“The Semiotics of the printed political advertising in the republic of Cyprus”

Description:

 Semiotics as a science that studies culture grounded in signification and communication processes, it also explores the mechanisms of coding, de-coding as well as interpreting specific messages in different areas and applications of Visual Communication. For the current post, the candidate will be expected to conduct an extensive research on printed political advertisements, published and circulated in the Republic of Cyprus, with the aim to conduct a Semiotic analysis, and interpretation of their content, within specific timeframes and historical events.

Candidates for this post should possess:

  1. M.A. Degree from an accredited University on the above topic areas or relevant degree.
  2. Excellent knowledge of English language.
  3. Ability to organize and carry out research independently.
  4. Sample of research work (from the candidate’s MA program) or sample of literature review on the topic proposal of  the current opening.
  5. Prior experience in research activities (i.e. publication record, submitting research proposals, participating in research programs) will be considered as an additional qualification.

This post involves practice-based and multidisciplinary research pivoting on multimedia instruments and drawing from subareas in technology/ engineering (Physical Computing, Electronics, HCI), design (Ludic Design, Critical Design, Speculative Design), and philosophy/theory (Speculative Fabulation, critical post-humanism, non-representational theory, composting, philosophy of technology). Candidates interested in NIMEs (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) and DIWO (Doing It With Others) are particularly encouraged to apply. Other than the University’s requirements, your application must include a letter of interest, describing own research interests and outlining the proposed area of focus (1-2 pages maximum) and an artistic Portfolio.
