The East Med Energy Research for Growth and Education Center of Excellence - EMERGE was established in 2018 with initial funding from the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and is based at the Cyprus University of Technology. The main goal of EMERGE is the production and dissemination of research and the provision of high-quality education & training in the general thematic area of Energy. At the same time, it aims to create a node of regional cooperation in this strategic sector for the country, with particular emphasis on hydrocarbons. The role of EMERGE is through both applied and basic research as well as education and training, to develop the human capacity and skills to support future scientific discovery and the relevant technology tools and services for ensuring the effective development of key energy infrastructure, maximizing the benefit of the public and safeguarding the environment. The centre consists of modern research infrastructure, a group of experienced academics, researchers and other scientists in Cyprus and abroad, as well as strong and active links with industry in order to implement its goals and the projects it undertakes in the best, most effective and scientifically valid way. To achieve its goals, the centre has set the following high-level objectives:

1. To tackle the biggest energy related challenges in science, society and economy.
2. To support the effective and coherent development of the energy sector.
3. To promote Cyprus as a regional hub for research, innovation, education & training.
4. To retain & invest capital expenditure in Cyprus, attracting further international funding.
5. To build collaborations and facilitate knowledge transfer with international highly reputed CoEs.
