Research

The creation and development of research laboratories is guided by the research activities of academic staff, which are part of scientific specialties and areas that are considered fundamental to the development of modern technology, such as the fields of construction science and materials strength, as well as hydraulics, hydraulic works, water resources management, geotechnical engineering, spatial analysis, geoinformatics, topography, road construction, transport, environmental engineering and applied technologies in general, but also in interdisciplinary subjects which do not fall entirely in the aforementioned areas.

The Department's staff have extensive and significant involvement in national, European, and international research programs.  The Department has been ranked first in securing funds for several projects within the whole university, from different funding sources, such as:

  • National Funds (Structural Funds, Research Promotion Foundation etc)
  • EC (HORIZON 2020, FP7, FP6, LIFE+, PRIMA, MED, ERASMUS+ etc)
  • Industry

The biggest success within the university is the ‘EXCELSIOR’ TEAMING H2020 Widespread Phase 2 project (www.excelsior2020.eu) (44 MILLION EUROS). Through the ‘ERATOSTHENES: Excellence Research Centre for Earth Surveillance and Space-Based Monitoring of the Environment’ with the acronym: ‘EXCELSIOR’, Horizon 2020 Widespread Teaming Phase 2 project, a new, autonomous and self-sustained Centre of Excellence entitled as ‘ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE)’  (www.eratosthenes.org.cy) will be created, as a result of upgrading the existing Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment Lab, operating within the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) since 2007. Within the next 7 years, the ECoE will become a world-class Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) for EO and Geospatial Information becoming the reference Centre in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA).
