PhD Program

The aim of the PhD program of the Department of Finance, Accounting and Management Science is to train PhD candidates to produce advanced research that is internationally competitive.

Based on the offered topics announced every semester, the opportunity for research is provided in the fields of Financial, Accounting, or Management Science, as well as a combination of these topics. For more information, students can contact the directors of the Doctoral Program through the Department's Secretary.

General Information

The typical duration of the curriculum is four (4) years of full-time attendance with 240 ECTS.  To obtain the PhD degree, students are expected to complete 48 ECTS of courses, pass the Comprehensive Examination (32 ECTS), prepare the PhD Dissertation Proposal (32 ECTS), and successfully complete the Research Part and the Public presentation and Defense (4x32 = 128 ECTS).

The total time of study for obtaining a doctoral degree may not exceed eight (8) academic years with a minimum of three (3) academic years.

Courses

FAMS 852 (Topics in Capital Markets I), FAMS 853 (Topics in Capital Markets II), FAMS 854 (Empirical Corporate Finance), and FAMS 855 (Econometric Methods) are mandatory (36 ECTS). Doctoral students also select 12 ECTS from other courses in the program, depending on their research interests. After a recommendation from their Advisor(s), students can enroll in additional courses related to the specialization of their doctoral subject.

Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive examination aims to evaluate the student's specialized knowledge in their field of study based on the research literature and to synthesize it with new research questions. The written exams are coordinated by the Program Directors in collaboration with the Advisor(s).

Selection Criteria

  • Academic excellence: Candidates must hold a recognized University Degree and a master’s Degree in Maritime or Finance or Economics or Business Administration or Pure and Applied Sciences. The successful candidates must have very good or excellent grade in the previous programs they have attended and have sufficient knowledge of the English language**.
  • Innovative research proposal: The candidates should submit a clear idea or question; what they propose to do. Further, they should explain why their proposal is important and identify the additional knowledge they expect to contribute to the relevant literature.
  • Reference letters: The candidates should submit at least two (2) reference letters from people they know them at the academic or professional level.
  •  Other criteria: Other certificates and documents such as academic or professional work (publications, newspaper articles, other research etc.).
  • Personal interview

 * The list of Elective Courses is subject to changes due to the restructure of the department.

** Acceptable evidence of English language proficiency is considered a G.C.E / I.G.C.S.E exam with a level of at least C or ELTS/IELTS of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL of at least 580 (paper-based test) / 82 (internet-based test). Graduates of an English-language University curriculum are exempt from this requirement. For the Greek language, a certificate of proficiency is a degree from a Greek-speaking secondary school or a Bachelor degree from a higher or higher education institution.
