Students and young researchers from the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (CII) enrolled in its Master in Public Health program within the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) hosted a number of internationally renowned researchers for a 2-day technical training workshop. The researchers represent two important European public health organizations: the Netherlands National Research Organization (TNO, the Netherlands) and the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM, UK). The student training event was organized by the CII-led EU Twinning project, called Exposogas (www.exposogas.eu ).
The training program was centered around the health risk assessment and characterization of hydrocarbons exposure effects on workers and on the general population surrounding such operations, using the novel framework of the human exposome.
The training program used team building activities and interactive media to engage the students/young researchers into a series of case studies that dealt with hydrocarbons exposures and their effects on human health, using the concept of the human exposome. The students were challenged with solving actual problems that exist in Cyprus with regards to the hydrocarbon industry. The topics of interest included the association between public health and general population residences’ proximity to gas stations, and the proximity to asphalt plants or oil refinery plants. Students studied these problems, produced plans of work, and presented study designs for these case studies applying the exposome concept.
Such events demonstrate the importance of education that goes beyond typical lectures in class and extends to applying team building skills, communicating scientific knowledge and ideas, or networking.
