The Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts deals with a wide range of distinct but interrelated research subjects such as graphic design and communication, games, new technologies, visual sociology, semiotics, museum studies, and design for social change. Research labs have been formed to guide research in these subjects as follows:
Museum Lab (a joint research lab between CUT and CYENS Centre of Excellence)
The Museum Lab is one CYENS Centre of Excellence’s Multidisciplinary Research Groups (MRGs). The Museum Lab is dedicated to the exploration of emerging technologies inside and outside museums and other heritage sites. We are an interdisciplinary team with expertise in museum studies, history, arts, archaeology, photography and new technologies such as 360 photography/video, photogrammetry, 3D modelling and AR/VR
Semiotics and Visual Communication Lab (SVC Lab)
This research lab promotes research, theory and design practice that examine the triangular relationship of Image/Text-Typography/Sound within the context of Semiotics, Art, Visual Communication and Social Engaged Design.
Language and Graphic Communication Research Lab (LGCRL)
The main research scope of this research lab is to study written discourse in terms of typography and graphic design. The basic thematic areas of research conducted in LGCRL lab are, a. the typographic rendering of the Cypriot dialect, b. visual language and technology and c. urban graphic language. The LGCRL Lab has a multidisciplinary approach and can perform multiple research activities in various research fields.
Art + Design: elearning lab - design for social change
This research lab pursues a variety of research activities and practical socially orientated interventions in support of design education, design for social change, social entrepreneurship, design education and technology-enhanced learning in art and design.
Visual Media Computing Research Lab
This research lab carries out research in the area of digital image processing, computer vision and computer graphics with emphasis on the development of 2D and 3D algorithms suitable for coding, interpretation, visualization and restoration of image objects that undergo appearance variations. Currently research activities in the lab are centred on the areas of Biometrics with emphasis on age invariant face image interpretation and age progression, on 3D reconstruction, visualization and virtual restoration of cultural heritage artefacts and Virtual Reality applications.
GET Lab - Microsoft Computer Games and Emerging Technologies Research Lab
This research lab conducts basic and applied research in the areas of Visual Computing, Computer Graphics, Computer Games, Virtual & Augmented Reality and Emerging Technologies. In basic research, the lab currently focuses on algorithms development for real-time rendering, realistic rendering, real-time illumination and sound simulation. Applied research carried out by the lab includes Immersion, Presence and Embodiment in Virtual Environments using emerging technologies, Virtual & Augmented Reality for well-being especially by combining neuroscience and cognitive psychology concepts and Serious Games for educational and training purposes.
Cyprus Interaction Lab (CIL)
This research lab studies the interaction of people with technology in various fields and aims to understand the significant supportive and mediating role of technology in promoting learning, communication and collaboration, and social change in varied circumstances and contexts. Members of the lab are active in the areas of Human Computer Interaction (HCI); Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL); Computer Games and their social and pedagogical dimensions; Technology-enhanced learning; Technology integration in K-20; Inclusive Design/Education; Social Aspects of Computing; and Educational Technology.
Media Arts and Design (MADLab)
This research lab pivots on hybrid and interdisciplinary research in arts, design, and emerging techno-scientific culture. Promoting a playful interaction between theory, engineering, and situated practice, it comprises a multi-disciplinary team of artists, creative technologists, designers, theorists, and digital craftsmen pursuing situated research in a wide array of subareas, inter alia concerning: electronic arts, cybernetic culture, digital theatre/performance, embodiment, making/hacking methodologies, animism, media archaeology, ‘dark’ ecology, AI and bio-inspired algorithms, VR/AR, ‘alien’ phenomenology, ethnography, posthuman studies, and DIWO (Do-It-With-Others) approaches to art and education. Drawing upon such traits, ongoing projects aim the production of experimental artefacts/prototypes, theoretical critique/analysis, original exploratory artworks, bespoke software/hardware, and all sorts of hybrids thereof. MAD Research Lab is hosted at the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol CY, and is co-directed by Doros Polydorou and Marinos Koutsomichalis since March 2019.
Serious Products Lab aims to domestically produce experimental products, through the possibilities provided by Digital Fabrication and to archive/recorde indigenous manufacturing practices that contribute to the understanding of product design in general. It also aims to export its practical and research results to the globally, through publications, exhibitions and participation.
