In the globalized economy, the financial services sector is prominent in terms of its contribution to growth. In general, finance focuses on the management of economic resources and risks and on methods of raising finance for the economic activities on which much of the world's economic activity depends. Also, the shipping sector is one of the major components of the national economy. The Department's undergraduate curriculum focuses on these two areas. In the first two years the programme offers general education aimed at understanding theory and analysis. In the third and fourth years, students will be taught specialised courses to gain in-depth knowledge of Finance.
The aim of the programme is to provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of finance in a modern and rapidly evolving economic system.
The primary objective of the programme is to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills and to provide them with a strong academic and professional background to enable them to apply for professional positions in financial institutions, accounting and audit firms, investment firms, agencies and general business services companies.
The programme aims to develop students' ability to analyse, understand and evaluate various issues related to the functioning of financial markets, fund management, asset valuation, investment appraisal, financial risk management and financial information analysis.
Students admitted by the Pancyprian examinations in the academic year 2024-25 will complete their studies only with finance direction. The following applies to these students:
In the first two years, offered courses provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and quantitative tools used in modern finance. During the first two years, the curriculum follows a core curriculum that equips students with a strong foundation in quantitative and analytical critical thinking. Courses offered include Economics, Accounting, Statistical Analysis, Finance, shipping and transportation and then (from fifth semester) specialization/concentration courses in contemporary finance.
Thereafter (from fifth semester onwards) the curriculum includes specialised and targeted courses in finance. Students choose advanced level courses in finance in order to deepen their knowledge, providing a strong academic and professional background. This specialisation gives students the opportunity to focus their studies, laying a solid foundation for future careers as leaders in either the private or public sector or as self-employed entrepreneurs. The curriculum includes, among others, financial statement analysis, econometrics, international financial markets, investment and risk management, market and banking.
