CYPRUS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF NURSING
RESEARCH FELLOW POSITIONS (POSTGRADUATE ASOCIATE/ASSISTANT RESEARCHER A-R1** OR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER- R2**)
Applications are invited from candidates who possess the necessary qualifications in order to fill one (1) Part-time Research Fellow position (Postgraduate Associate / Assistant Researcher A – R1** or Postdoctoral Researcher– R2**) at the Department of Nursing in the field of “Public Health”.
The position concerns employment within the framework of the ALTHEA research project (Disease prevention postpartum: enabling social connections to change health behaviours) funded by the EXCELLENCE program of the Research and Innovation Foundation (2025-2027). The ALTHEA project will develop and evaluate a digital behavioral health tool designed to promote breastfeeding, smoking cessation and physical activity among postpartum women, leveraging social networks and behavior change techniques. Using mixed methods and a participatory, individual approach, the researcher will co-develop the guiding principles and technical specifications of the tool with end-users, followed by community-level pilot testing to assess feasibility and acceptance. The tool will then be developed into a longitudinal observational study to map women’s social networks (both egocentric and sociocentric) during pregnancy and postpartum, allowing examination of how attitudes and behaviors spread through social ties. Finally, a randomized controlled pilot will experimentally test whether behavior change messages—delivered alone or reinforced by socially centric “peer-influenced mentors”—can accelerate positive changes within these networks. This project will generate new datasets and evidence on the mechanisms of social transmission, the role of network structure in health behavior change, and the potential of digitally enabled peer influence to improve maternal and child health.
The researcher will undertake a mixed methodology study (interviews, focus groups, delphi study) to develop an application that studies the spread of health behaviors (breastfeeding, physical activity, smoking) among women who have recently given birth and an intervention to promote healthy health behaviors based on Social Contagion Theory and Behavior Change Techniques from the relevant literature. At the same time, the researcher will contribute to the collection of data from the women who will use the application and will coordinate an experimental/interventional study.
