For every newcomer student graduate program, the Department provides academic advisor. For the doctoral programme the role of the academic advisor can also be his/her research advisor.
For every student in the Postgraduate Programme the department appoints an Academic Supervisor, whereas at the research stage of the Ph.D. a Research Supervisor is appointed. Students select a member of the academic staff to act as their Research Supervisor. The student's choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the students in their research and provides the necessary help and advice.
If the topic of the thesis of the Doctoral student is of interdepartmental nature, with a decision from both Departments the student can be assigned advisors from both.
In the event that the Advisor of a student leaves the University, if the student wishes, he/she may maintain the advisor to continue working with them. But in this case, a co-advisor will be assigned with a professor from within the University.
If the postgraduate research Advisor retires from the University, under the responsibility of the Department and in consultation with the student, a new advisor is assigned to them. In the case that a doctoral student has passed the oral defense of his thesis, and the research Advisor though he has retired may remain, provided that the University assigns a co-advisor that still works in the University.
Requests for the supervision of doctoral theses and dissertations by faculty that are on sabbatical or unpaid leave, are dealt with exclusively by the Board of the Department.
