The overall purpose of the CII doctoral program is to prepare new researchers (from a broad range of health and related sciences), with knowledge and skills in the full range of philosophical and methodological approaches in Environmental and Public Health research, in order to be able to pursue a research and / or academic career either in a clinical or in an academic/research setting.
The main aims of the research agenda at the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (CII), CUT are: (a) to advance environmental and public health research nationally and internationally, (b) to produce a scientifically-sound research base and (c) enhance the knowledge that will inform health policies and agendas for population health. The professional and personal development of the program’s graduates is aimed at creating a critical mass of the next generation of capable researchers who will contribute with their original research findings to the international literature. They will be in the position to make critical and crucial contributions to the development of Environmental and Public Health research and its interconnection with national policies and agendas as well as to maximize the contribution of Environmental and Public Health research to the advancement of Health Sciences both nationally and internationally.
As such, the doctoral program specifically aims to:
- Promote innovation and focus in research and encourage independent thinking.
- Promote the development of research skills in the area of environmental and public health for both research and application/policy.
- Promote an understanding of the translational aspects of research in public health and how results can be turned into policy and such policies in turn evaluated.
- Equip students with skills and knowledge necessary for independent research
In parallel, within the framework of the doctoral program, significant synergies have been developed with academic institutions and clinical centers locally and internationally through collaborations on research protocols and / or the participation of academics from other Universities in the three-member Thesis Advisory Committee. Aside supporting the effective guidance of the doctoral candidates, this practice promotes the links with the community of practicing health professionals and the internationalization of the Institute.
