In light of the current needs and requirements of the country in the field of health, especially in areas related to the restoration of communication problems, the Cyprus University of Technology founded the first Department of Rehabilitation Sciences in Cyprus. The Department offers the first public recognized university bachelor degree in Speech Language Therapy / Speech Language Pathology in the Greek language. The Department prepares its graduates for careers in both the public and private employment context. The organization of the academic programme and clinical training meet the standards and principles of internationally recognized programmes. The Speech Language Therapy Programme of the Cyprus University of Technology guarantees a high standard academic and clinical education required by the modern society of Cyprus, its citizens and people suffering from communication disorders.
The vision of the Department is to develop and establish itself as an internationally recognized academic, research, clinical research and education center in the field of Speech Therapy-Speech Pathology sciences. The Department works with a modern curriculum that provides infrastructure courses from the sciences of Linguistics, Biology, Medicine and Psychology. The necessary specialization courses focus on speech disorders, voice and hearing disorders, swallowing disorders as well as courses on new technology.
The primary goal of the Department is to foster, develop and promote the Speech Therapy field in Cyprus, by producing (through research) and disseminating (through training) the necessary scientific knowledge, know-how and technology. Other objectives of the department are:
- To attract academic staff of the highest level.
- To provide students for the first time the opportunity to study the science of Speech Therapy in a public institution in Cyprus, within a high-level academic and clinical environment.
- To establish close ties of cooperation with the local community such as schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers etc.
- To promote international cooperation and educational mobility, especially in Europe.
The aim of the Department is to provide high quality education and to promote research and related applications in Rehabilitation Sciences. The vision of the Department is to become a center of excellence in teaching, research and clinical treatment, both in Cyprus and the wider Middle East region.
The Department starts being operational by offering an undergraduate programme in Speech Therapy / Speech Pathology enabling 30 students to enroll. The undergraduate programmes in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Clinical Social Work will then follow.
The Department's curriculum will be the Cyprus standards for these specializations, as they are the first to be offered in a public university in the country, while its launch will give great impetus to research activity in Cyprus in the field of Rehabilitation Sciences.
Employment Prospects: the graduates of the programme will be able to exercise the full range of Speech Therapy / Speech Pathology both in government and private hospitals, rehabilitation centers and schools, to exercise their profession as freelancers, as well as to expand their practice into areas of research, education and administration in health services.
The Department of Rehabilitation has the vision to get the Rehabilitation Clinic recognized as a model and pioneering facility in the community that provides services to people of any age, who suffer from communication and / or fatigue disorders, aiming to improve the quality of life of these individuals.
The primary purpose of the Rehabilitation Clinic is its recognition as an excellent model research and treatment center for children and adults suffering from communication and swallowing disorders. The additional objectives of the creation of the Rehabilitation Clinic are:
- To provide clinical service
- To provide educational service
- To promote research studies
- To approach and secure research funds (local and international) for the promotion of qualitative research
- To get the clinic recognized both at a local and international level for its services provided on the restoration of communication and swallowing disorders.
The Speech and Hearing Clinic
The Rehabilitation Clinic will house the three main pillars of Rehabilitation, being the Speech Therapy, the Physiotherapy and the Occupational Therapy. The Rehabilitation Clinic will also provide for hosting services of future academic programmes such as Clinical Social Work, which falls under the umbrella of the Department of Rehabilitation.
As a means of ensuring high level of quality that is consistent with the level of high standards in health, clinical contain appropriate and modern technology. Also given the role of the science of Speech Therapy in the health sector, it is teaching and the application of evidence-based practice (Evidence Based Practice).
The operation of the clinic provides students with a model of good practice and training opportunity in an environment that inspires them to transfer and apply their theoretical experience into clinical practice through practical ways and proper guidance.
