International Profile

An important parameter of the international recognition that the University enjoys is the universities’ international rankings. In less than 14 years of operation, the CUT has occupied high positions in three of the most well-known international ranking lists: Times Higher Education, QS and Shanghai.

Specifically, in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), the CUT is ranked 301-350 worldwide, the highest position amongst universities in Cyprus and Greece, for the years 2020, 2019 and 2018.

In other THE rankings, the CUT occupies the following positions:

  • Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 202057th in the top new universities in the world.
  • Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020: 44th among 533 universities of countries classified as emerging. 
  • Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020: ranked 301- 400 among 766 universities included in the list. In the Impact Rankings for individual SDG's, our University ranked high for the following SDG's :
  1. SDG 13: Climate Action- 53th (among 376 universities).
  2. SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy- 73th (among 361 univeristies).
  3. SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing- ranked 101-200 (among 620 universities).
  4. SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production- ranked 101-200 (among 360 universities).
  • Times Higher Education Best Universities in Europe 2020: ranked 148th in the top 417 European Universities.  
  • Times Higher Education World's Best Small Universities 2019: ranked 17th in the top 20 small universities worldwide.

Also, in the international ranking "QS World University Rankings - Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) 2021" the CUT occupies the honorable 110th place among the 400 universities of the emerging region of Europe and Central Asia (EECA Region) included in the list.

Regarding the international rankings at the level of scientific fields (subject rankings), it is worth noting that for three consecutive years (2018, 2019 and 2020), the CUT is ranked 101-150 in the scientific field "Nursing" among the best universities in the world included in the list, according to Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

The international networking of the university is realized through its participation in 67 international organizations and bilateral cooperation with 78 universities abroad which lead to beneficial inter-university synergies. In addition, the internationalization strategy is enhanced through its participation in the Erasmus mobility programme and the national management of the IAESTE programme.

Excellence in Research

CUT is constantly committed to promoting research excellence, and is internationally distinguished in this area, providing a total of 40 million Euros of external funding for 227 research programmes. The latest European HORIZON 2020 programme has secured funding over 9 million Euros, with 23 research proposals, marking the highest rate of success in Cyprus. Recent successes include two ERC strategic projects totaling 3.3 million Euros, two “Teaming for Excellence” research proposals led by the CUT, which ensured the highest pan-European rating and participation in the creation of a RISE Excellence Center for technological and business innovation.

In addition to European research funding, strategic research synergies such as the establishment of the Cancer Research Center, in cooperation with the German Oncology Center, are being promoted. The three already existing approved research units, Eratosthenes, Heraclitus, and the Department of Social Informatics are also operating with great success.

Innovation and Transfer of Know-how

With a view to enhancing innovation and entrepreneurship, the CUT has made a decisive contribution, together with the other two public universities, to the formulation and adoption by the State of relevant legislation to facilitate the incubation of start-ups by universities for direct interconnection with the economy and productivity. At the same time, recognizing the importance of innovation and transfer of know-how, the University has activated an Approved Policy Framework for Ownership, Distribution and Commercial Exploitation of Technology aiming to exploit its research results.

In addition, it has appointed a responsible Office (INTENT) to examine applications from the university community for intellectual property protection (including patents) and aims to maximize the capitalization of innovations being developed in transferring know-how to the business world. So far, eight patents have been registered by academics of the University. In addition, the University maintains cooperation with state bodies (e.g. Research Promotion Foundation (RPF), European Programmes Office, National Research and Innovation Committee of the Ministry of Education and Culture) to promote innovation issues.

Finally, the University aims to actively participate in the Science Technology Park (STP), which will be the strongest tool for developing synergies with industry and, above all, with high technology companies.

Interconnection with Industry

The University closely collaborates with local agencies such as the Limassol Chamber of Commerce, Limassol Municipality, industry and shipping companies. Particularly in areas of excellence and in relation to economic developments such as Shipping, Hotel Industry, Energy Sources Management, the University is a bridge to communication with the international business environment. Also, the CUT, being the main research and development body for the region, assists and collaborates in a variety of ways with local and international SMEs.  

University Development: a lever for the development of the city  

Having its headquarters in the historical center of the city, the University has become a point of reference in Limassol, but also a lever of the city's development. In the 1st Development Pillar at the heart of the city, a series of historic buildings have undergone renovation and modernization, while the implementation of the 2nd Pillar of the University at the premises of the Old Hospital, the First Technical School and the Police Directorate has begun with the erection of the University Clinical Rehabilitation. The 3rd Pillar concerns the development of sites, sports facilities and other University facilities, open to the public, in the Berengaria area  in Polemidia. The Municipal and University Library (formerly referred to as Pilavakis Mansion) is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. Within 2018, the Fine Arts Laboratories (Tseriotis Building) will also operate, including workshops for sculpture, painting, engraving and a multifunctional teaching classroom. Upon establishment of the University in the city center, Limassol has become a modern and cosmopolitan student campus where the university community actively lives and contributes significantly to the city's events by organizing social, sports, cultural and artistic activities that enrich the student experience and the everyday life of the citizens of Limassol.

Social Responsibility and Contribution

One of the most important operating principles of the Cyprus University of Technology is the social responsibility and the substantial contribution to society, in other words to operate responsibly in areas that are important axes of sustainable development.

In this context, the University develops actions with a positive impact on the wider society through cultivating a social consciousness culture in sectors of social interest (environmental, humanitarian activities, sports, health).

In the health sector, a voluntary blood donation has been established twice a year as well as free medical examinations for the public. The annual sports co-organized events include participation in marathon and sporting activities for good causes. The University also supports a variety of public and nonprofit organizations such as PASYKAF, the Red Cross, Hope for Children, Love Route, and takes initiatives for socially vulnerable groups such as refugees, unemployed youths (under special programmes of the HR Development Office) and poor fellow citizens or deprived students and excellent students (through scholarships). Finally, while pursuing the promotion of culture, the University is committed to strengthening existing activities and to developing new cultural activities of the University on the basis of a long-term policy, in cooperation with the cultural institutions of Cyprus.

Environmental Responsibility and Awareness

As a "green" University, through the Environmental Management Office, it applies environmental practices daily such as the University Energy Management, hazardous laboratory waste management, green consciousness events, environmentally friendly cars for the needs of the University, and the use of recycling bins. In addition, the University has been awarded for its Best Practices for Environmental Management / Sustainability obtaining four Green Public Procurement Awards 2015 and 2016, as well as the Green Prize for Green and Sustainable Public Procurement and the silver Environmental Leadership Award at the 2016 Environmental Awards, and awards in the "Buildings - Facilities" category at the 2016 Education Business Awards. Additionally, a significant funding of €500,000 has recently been secured through the Climate-KIC Knowledge and Innovation Community In Cyprus (Cyprus University of Technology, Chrysalis LEAP and the Energy Office of Cypriot citizens) for 8 actions of education, innovation and entrepreneurship in the green development sector.  

Investing in Human Resources

By deploying staff as the prerequisite for university development, the investment in staff is continuous through participation in ongoing training programmes or adopting innovative staff management practices.

The CUT is the only public university in Cyprus and the wider pan-hellenic area that holds the International Human Resources Management and Development Certification - Investors Ιn People (Silver), which recognizes the best human resources management practices applied to the organization.

At the same time, CUT has received a silver award in the Excellence in Employee Work-life Balance at the 2016 HR Awards, the "HR - Best Working Environment" award at the 2016 Education Business Awards, distinction as a National Champion in the "Employer of the Year Award "at the 2016/17 European Business Awards and certification by the National Agency for the Certification of Businesses for the Implementation of Good Practices on Gender Equality at Workplace (2017).
